THE RISING DEMAND OF CARPETS IN THE GLOBAL MARKET

The Oriental carpets have many uses including floor coverings. They can be used as curtains, blankets, tomb covers and tent coverings. These carpets were always attached to the life of the people and have put up utmost care on them.

The oriental carpets are those carpets made in the parts of North Africa, Europe, Western and Central Asia. These rugs offer a wide variety of utilitarian and symbolic purposes. They are widely produced for home use, local sale and global sale. They are also available in various sizes from small to large room sized carpets. The production involves people from different cultures, countries, racial groups and religious faiths.

The oriental carpets are made with different materials like silk, wool and cotton. These rugs are woven with hand with natural fibers like wool, cotton, silk, etc. The carpets are also made with metal threads like gold and silver. They are either hand spun or machine spun with strings of yarn, which are later knotted into the warp. The threads are dyed with different natural and synthetic dyes which make them more vibrant and aesthetic. Once the weaving is done, the borders of the rugs are fastened and washed in order to obtain an even surface. 

MATERIALS USED FOR THE CARPETS
Materials used in carpet weaving and the process of weaving vary in differ from place to place. Usually wool and cotton are used for the foundation of the rug. Silk from silk worms is used for representational rugs.

WOOL
The characteristics and quality of the oriental rugs vary from place to place. Different areas of the world produce different quality wools, from the thickness of the material to the durability of the quality. It is generally during the spring time, wool of finer quality is produced. Some dye it in different colors; some weavers prefer the natural color.

COTTON
Cotton material is able to tolerate more pressure due to which it can be spun more tightly than wool. Large size carpets are likely to lie flat on the floor, whereas wools tend to get easily shrink unevenly. Since the nineteenth century, cotton has been used as a substitute for silk.
SILK

Silk is comparatively more expensive than the other materials. They are used to highlight special elements and patterns of the carpets. The finishing of silk carpets is more refined and designs are more clearly elaborated. The silk has low resistance to mechanical pressure, therefore makes them used for wall hangings and pillow tapestry.

The world with geographical and cultural diversity offer varieties of carpet styles. With the increase in the demand of carpets in global market, the manufacturers have been producing quality carpets and floor coverings with various natural fibers.
